As well as contributors to the detailed naming and mapping of Afon Dyfi
we welcome
author and place-name activist, Rhian Parry, 'Cerdded y Caeau' (2022), Liz Fenwick and Cyril Jones, ‘Hud Afon Arth’
and
author, Carwyn Graves, presents his newly published book
Tir: The Story of the Welsh Landscape:

The morning will be bilingual (Cyril Jones) and in English (Carwyn Graves)

With simultaneous translation for the afternoon events most of which will be in Welsh.

The focus of this exciting day will mark a significant aspect of the Welsh language and share ‘Dilyn Dyfi’, as an endeavour to collect and record the names of the river's fishing ponds, creeks, fords, bridges and much more along the Afon Dyfi from its source to the sea.

Bydd y digwyddiad undydd hwn yn tynnu ar brosiect 'Dilyn Dyfi', ymdrech i gasglu enwau pyllau pysgota, cilfachau, rhydiau, pontydd, caeau a llawer mwy ar hyd afon Dyfi o'i tharddiad yng Nghreiglyn Dyfi i'r môr.

Without being recorded, many of these names would have disappeared within a generation or more. The time has come.

Heb eu cofnodi, byddai llawer o’r enwau hyn wedi diflannu ymhen cenhedlaeth neu fwy. Arhosant.

The names showed how the river has a different character along its journey from Greiglyn Dyfi to the sea. In her young life, we see names that express her lively journey, Llaethnant, Rhaeadr Rhiw March, Penelin y Nant, Rhyd y Gerwyn, Tap Nyth yr Eryr and Twll y Gwynt, gushing over rocks. In the middle stretches the river slows down and we find names like Ystum Lwyd, Dôl Dafydd, Gro, Grafel, and Marian Mawr, shingled edges fringed with meadows. Towards the sea it slows, opens out to Morfa, Gweirglodd and Aber, to marshland and the estuary. We also find references to industries, transport and more.

Yn ei bywyd ifanc, gwelwn enwau sy’n mynegi ei thaith fyrlymus, yn yr enwau, Llaethnant, Rhaeadr Rhiw March, Penelin y Nant, Rhyd y Gerwyn ac uwchben, Tap Nyth yr Eryr a Thwll y Gwynt. Yn y canol, mae’r afon yn arafu a chawn enwau fel Ystum Lwyd, Dôl Dafydd, Gro, Grafel, a Marian Mawr. Tua’r môr cawn, Morfa, Gweirglodd ac Aber. Cawn hefyd gyfeiriadau at ddiwydiannau, trafnidiaeth a mwy.

‘Dilyn Dyfi’ inspiration grew out of a book event in April 2023 with Rhian Parry. The topic of her book 'Cerdded Y Caeau' [Walking the Fields] created so much interest it seemed natural to take it further.

Tyfodd allan o ddigwyddiad llyfr ym mis Ebrill 2023 gyda Rhian Parry. Creodd testun ei chyfrol 'Cerdded Y Caeau' gymaint o ddiddordeb fel ei bod yn ymddangos yn naturiol i fynd ag ef ymhellach.

Rhian’s personal interest, together with her work with the Welsh Place Names Association, is the study and understanding of place names and involves interpreting the origins and histories captured by the language reflecting so much of the topography, environment and culture of, in this case, discrete areas of Afon Dyfi’s impact.

Ffocws personol Rhian, yghyd â’i gwaith gyda Chymdeithas Enwau Lleoedd Cymru , yw astudio a deall a dehongli gwreiddiau a hanes enwau lleoedd Cymraeg, sy’n adlewyrchu cymaint o’r dopograffeg, yr amgylchedd a’r diwylliant. Yn yr achos hwn, ardaloedd arwahanol o effaith afon Dyfi.

The series of workshops in 2023 were very busy as local people recorded names on huge paper maps, In addition, there were many interesting and fun conversations discussing the names and linking them with local stories.

Bu’r gweithdai yn brysur iawn wrth i ardalwyr gofnodi enwau ar fapiau papur enfawr, Yn ogystal, bu sawl sgwrs ddifyr a hwyliog wrth drafod yr enwau a’u cyplysu â hanesion lleol.
