Pen’rallt Gallery Bookshop has the honour of launching and celebrating Mike Parker’s eagerly awaited, On the Red Hill, with its publishers, William Heinemann

You are invited to join us, 7 for 7.30pm, for this illustrated talk given by author, Mike Parker with his account of how this book came to life in the very place of its setting and amidst the people and the seasons closest to his heart.

N.B. We’ve rescheduled this event to the auditorium of Y Tabernacl, MoMA Machynlleth. More roomy, bigger slide show but incurring slightly more cost. So we hope you will still book to join us for what promises to be a hugely entertaining and interesting illustrated talk, free wine /soft drinks and canapes for the modest ticket price of £3. On The Red Hill will be on sale at the special launch price of £14 (RRP16.99). The book can also be pre-ordered in advance of the launch through this website for £14.

Mike and his partner Peredur (Preds) inherited a remote 18th-century farmhouse in the Welsh hills, a whitewashed “house from the children’s stories”. It was left to them by their friends Reg and George, a couple for over 60 years before they died within a few weeks of each other, aged 94 and 84 respectively.

On the Red Hill tells the story of Rhiw Goch, the Red Hill, but also the story of a community and of “the voices that are often muted in studies of rural life”.

Using four individuals, the four elements and the four seasons for its structure, the book is a celebration too of “the ebb and flow of seasons, of an ever-changing landscape, of decades-long relationships, and of the family (both beloved and infuriating) that you find when you least expect it”.

On the Red Hill is a praise-poem to adventure, belonging, the power of nature and, above all, to the resilience of human beings and the love between them. Parker’s great strength and passion is in illuminating certain hidden strata of these islands, in the unearthing and re-telling of stories silenced by the forces of political history; here, he applies those talents to his own biography, and to some of those blessed enough to share it. He has produced a beautiful, immersive and - in these testing times - vital and necessary book.

A marvellous book. It is an uplifting tale of tranquillity sought and found in the nearest Britain gets to paradise.
— Sir Simon Jenkins
This is such a delightful book about beauty, joy, love and home. Risky themes nowadays, but held to account by the richly rigorous – and clever – structure.
