Gweithdy cofnodi mân enwau lleoedd dyffryn Dyfi
Mae’r prosiect hwn yn bartneriaeth rhwng Cymdeithas Enwau Lleoedd Cymru a Siop Lyfrau’r Senedd-dy, Merched y Wawr, amaethwyr lleol, Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, a chymdeithasau pysgota.
LANGUAGE FLOWS FROM THE LAND
This is a project by ‘The Welsh Placenames Society’ in collaboration with Siop Lyfrau’r Senedd-dy, local design studio Glasbrint and the local community – one that has gone from strength to strength. The intention was to record place names along the river Dyfi and in its vicinity. This was accomplished thanks to farming union officials, fishing association members and Merched y Wawr. The contributors came in droves to one of our many workshops during 2023 whether in the Senedd-dy, Machynlleth or in Caffi'r Hen Siop in Dinas Mawddwy.
Without being recorded, many of these names would have disappeared within a generation or more. Their richness now remains in the country's memory, revealing the local history and culture. There is only a small selection to be seen here on the interpretative banners, a legacy to be kept in the Senedd-dy. We are greatly indebted to all those who contributed and those who shared their personal collections. All are now on the society's digital map and can be seen on our website, under 'Digital Map'
What is the purpose of collecting local place names?
The whole purpose of collecting them and making them visible to everyone on the web is to encourage local and national interest in names and to emphasise their importance as stepping stones to our history and culture.
It is important to enjoy the names and protect them. Here, they show how the river’s character changes along its journey from Creiglyn Dyfi to the sea. We hope the names will inspire artists, musicians, poets, craftsmen, writers and all other talented people to create creative work that will celebrate the Dyfi river and preserve the spirit of the names for the future.
